The Practice
We take a small number of private commissions a year, so that each one has the whole of our attention.
Every building is already telling you something, however quietly and however modest it is. The work begins by hearing it before adding anything to it.
Which means we will sometimes tell you no. Where a constraint comes from the fabric of the building rather than from taste, the building leads, and we will explain why rather than quietly design around it.

How do we design
Architecture begins with a childhood memory.
Ask anyone to describe the room they loved most as a child and they will not give you its dimensions. They will start with telling you about the light, the smell of the floor, the sound the door made when it closed.
That is the part of a building that stays with a person, and it is the part most architecture leaves to chance. We have a different philosophy
